Just Engaged? Your First Steps to Planning a Wedding Near Fort Wayne
Congratulations! If you just got engaged, you're probably still staring at the ring and fielding texts from everyone you know. The holidays are a popular time to get engaged, so if you're one of the many Northeast Indiana couples starting to plan this season, you're in good company. The next question comes quickly, too: "So, when's the wedding?"
You don't need every answer right away. Here are the first few steps that make the rest of the planning easier, from the team at The Eden, a wedding and event venue in Hoagland, just a few minutes south of Fort Wayne.
Enjoy being engaged for a minute
Before you open a single spreadsheet, take a week or two to simply enjoy it. Celebrate with family and friends, take some photos of the ring, and talk with each other about what this season means to you. Planning goes better when it starts from excitement instead of pressure.
Picture the day together
Next, sit down together and talk about the day you each imagine. You don't need details yet, just the big picture:
Do you see a big celebration with everyone you know, or something smaller and more intimate?
Does the day feel classic and elegant, relaxed and rustic, or somewhere in between?
Is there a season you love, like a warm summer evening, fall colors, or a cozy winter celebration?
Do you want the ceremony and reception in the same place, so guests never have to drive between them?
Your answers become your guide for every decision that follows, and they make venue tours much more useful.

Set a budget before you fall in love with anything
It's not the most romantic step, but it's one of the most important. Decide together what you're comfortable spending, and talk with anyone who plans to contribute. Then think about what matters most to you. For some couples that's the food, for others it's photography, music, or the dress. Knowing your priorities makes it easier to decide where to spend and where to save.

Start a rough guest list
Your guest count shapes almost everything else, especially your venue and catering. A rough list is enough for now: immediate family, extended family, friends, coworkers, and plus-ones. Even a ballpark number like "around 150" or "closer to 300" will help you narrow down which venues fit.
Tour a few venues
Once you have a feel for your style, budget, and guest count, it's time to start touring. Photos online only tell part of the story, so walking through a venue in person is the best way to know if it feels right. Here are a few questions worth asking on every tour:
Can we have the ceremony and the reception here?
Where will we get ready on the day?
Is there a smaller space for a shower or a smaller gathering?
Who handles the food, and can we taste it?
Who will plan with us, and who is there on the day of the wedding?
At The Eden, those answers are all under one roof. Our facility sits on 24 acres and holds up to 400 guests. The ballroom has a wood dance floor, chandeliers, and draped ceilings, and it works for your ceremony, your reception, or both. On-site ceremonies are available as an add-on when you book. The bridal suite gives you a private place to get ready, and our smaller banquet room, with its sliding barn doors, is a natural fit for showers and smaller gatherings. Every couple has an Eden event manager as their point of contact, from your planning meeting through the day of your event. Want someone to run the timeline for you? Day-of coordination is available as an add-on.

Think about food early
Food is one of the things guests remember most, so it's worth thinking about early in your planning. Our full-service in-house catering is cooked in our own kitchen, and our team plans the menu with you and serves your guests on the day. Having the kitchen, the venue, and your event manager working together means one less vendor to find and one less set of plans to keep in sync. Prefer a caterer you already love? Outside catering from a licensed, insured caterer is allowed with approval and an added fee, and your event manager can walk you through the details.

Save the rest for later
Flowers, favors, the playlist, the cake flavor: all of it can wait until your date and venue are set. Once those two pieces are in place, the rest of your planning has a clear starting point, and the details tend to fall into place much more easily.
